Designed
by the Rockwell Group, Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant &
Lounge’s elegant wood and stone decor fosters a vibrant
atmosphere while its intimate size exudes exclusivity. The
restaurant’s signature design element - a 25-by-13-foot
wall-mounted installation at the entrance - was created by
the team at Brad Oldham Int’l, Inc. (BOI) using bronze
metal scales that resemble the dorsal side of the eponymous
fish.
Nearly 9,000 bronze scales – each 4 inches
by 3 inches – were stamped into a custom shape and then
hand antiqued to a warm finish before being placed onto a
sculpted fishtail created out of fiberglass and wood. To create
a 3D fish-scale look with visual movement, the structural
support incorporated carefully placed grooves and raised areas;
without these components, the piece would have come across
as flat. The lighting of the piece was carefully considered
in placement and color as it adds warmth and glow to the fishtail
coming “out of the wall.”
The huge sculpture was assembled in the company’s
Dallas studio. Once together, the team removed several vertical
rows of scales and cut the sculpture into five pieces for
shipping to Las Vegas. Each scale and section was numbered
to provide for a one-day installation upon arrival. The installation
team simply installed the five panels and drilled in the missing
scales.
The Yellowtail design was recently named “Best
Restaurant/Lounge” of the year in the Full Service category.
Guests of Yellowtail seeking the quintessential Las Vegas
