Tortilla wraps
go gourmet at Planet Burrito, where exotic Polynesian and
Indonesian burritos are offered alongside more traditional
Texan and Southwestern stuffed wraps. The owners of the restaurant
wanted an interior as enticing and fresh as its food. They
originally asked Brad Oldham to create metal frames covered
with silver spandex fabric, as they wanted a unique look for
the ceiling. Oldham had a better idea: He created pearl-resin
panels that resembled jumbo potato chips to float from the
ceiling and create better light for diners. Another signature
element of the environment is the LED, back-lit simulated
quartz blocks installed in walls and counters.
Once involved in the restaurant design, Oldham’s
role increased. He suggested such additional design suggestions
such as custom resin-and-sand tables, along with other items:
• Approximately 50 hand-built and hand-finished dining
tables with custom resin-and-sand tops for the two locations
• Resin-panel accent pieces in yellow, orange, green,
and blue in the serving line and railing–anything lit
with color in the restaurant is likely something Oldham provided
• Resin ceiling tiles that look like big potato chips
• Custom front door handles
• Wooden benches and planters in front of the store
